dc.description.abstract | 本文旨在釐清、重建雍正四年水沙連之役的史實。

dc.description.translationabstract | This paper clarifies and reconstructs history of the Battle of Shui-sha-lian that happened in the 4th year of the Yong-Zheng period. The imperial archives of the Yong-Zheng period are the most essential material referred in this paper, although the local gazetteers, historical contracts, and other relevant historical records supplement the paper with additional historical facts._x000D_ In this paper, I explore (1) progress of the battle from its beginning to the end, (2) the locales where “fierce aborigines” showed up and killed people, (3) the maneuver of imperial troops entering the battlefield, (4) their dispositions and the number of the force, (5) the outcome of this battle and its aftermath influence. The last portion of the paper provides my conclusion._x000D_ For the battle of Shui-sha-lian, the Qing Empire mobilized two-thousand-some soldiers, and the military operation took fourteen days in total. However, the imperial victory only came with twenty-some captives. The imperial troops were quite restrained, and carried out the mission without massacres. Considering all above, the_x000D_ imperial military goal then appeared to be appeasing the aborigines in this incident,_x000D_ while, as an Ombudsman, Suo-Lin’s participation in this operation might also prompt such an outcome.
