A Study of the Transformation from Qie ( ) to Qie (且) Based on the Unearthed Written Materials Used before Qin Dynasty
dc.type期刊篇目
In the article, the author presents a different viewpoint of the transition from the character Qie ( ) to the character Qie (且), which was traditionally understood as a content word used as a function word, and investigates into the differences between Qie ( ), which was used before Qin dynasty as seen in the unearthed written materials, and Qie (且), which was used in classics as a conjunction, a modal particle,_x000D_ and an adverb. Based on the unearthed written materials used during the periods of Yin-Zhou, Spring and Autumn and Warring States, Qin dynasty, and the beginning of Han dynasty, the author not only clearly presents the development of these two characters and their mutual relationship, but also further studies the developing process of Qie ( ) and Qie (且) as a function word. As a result, it is found that in Qin Writing System, Qie ( ) was modified to form a new character, Zu (祖) , which was then commonly used and caused Qie ( ) and Qie (且) to interfere with each other._x000D_ That is, Qie (且), used today, originated from Qie ( ). However, because the emperor Qin Shi Huang implemented the so-called “Unified Writing System” in China, the character Qie ( ) in Six States’ writing system was transformed to the_x000D_ character Qie (且), and then Qie ( ) disappeared. The classics available now are the manuscripts reproduced by hand by people of Qin and Han dynasties. Hence, in place of the character Qie ( ), only the character Qie (且) can be found in these works.
