The story of White Snake is a sad and yet beautiful folk legend. It has been well_x000D_ presented and has continued to thrive through different literary genres such as novel, drama, and recital. Its long period of transformation and its development in connotation have always caught great attention from the academia. After its debut, the Chinese opera The Legend of White Snake produced by Tian Han has been highly_x000D_ praised, and has set up an example of current White Snake dramatic presentation on the stage. The image of Tian Han’s White Snake has transformed from the original scary “monstrous snake” to the poor and respectable “celestial snake,” while the White Snake’s role of a “good wife” and “mother” has been more associated with the “human” image. However, this image transformation does not come without a clue._x000D_ The White Snake tales and dramas appearing in the Ming and Qing Dynasty have shown the trace of its transformation, and such change is actually a response to the expectation of the audience. People’s strong yearning for love and affection urges the White Snake story to get rid of its nature of “spirits and demons,” and to be more_x000D_ inclined to the “human world.” This not only adds civilian color to the story but also reflects its new meaning of the time.
