Objective This project, led by the Feng Chia University Architectural Social Design & Local Revitalization Research Lab, aims to establish a finely categorized resource recycling station within the Gonglaoping community through participatory design, integrating community building and local revitalization principles. By reshaping the traditional negative perception of recycling stations, the project seeks to enhance residents' awareness and engagement in environmental protection. Additionally, it promotes sustainable resource utilization while strengthening community cohesion. Process & Methodology The project adopts a multi-phase participatory design approach, emphasizing deep resident engagement and cross-disciplinary collaboration: 1. Needs Assessment & Current Situation Analysis In the initial phase, the team conducted field research and resident interviews within the Gonglaoping community to identify issues in the existing recycling system and understand the actual needs of the residents. 2. Design Workshops & Consensus Building To encourage community participation, multiple design workshops were organized, inviting residents to collaboratively discuss the layout and functionality of the recycling station. These workshops generated valuable insights, including suggestions on recycling flow optimization, improved lighting conditions, and the integration of local cultural elements. The discussions not only strengthened residents' sense of ownership over the project but also provided a concrete foundation for the subsequent design phases. 3. Conceptual Design & Experimental Testing Based on the workshop outcomes, the team developed an initial recycling station design, prioritizing detailed waste categorization, user convenience, and educational display functions. To validate the design’s feasibility, the team gathered community feedback on the station’s usability and continuously refined the design based on the insights received. 4. Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration & Resource Integration Throughout the project, the team closely collaborated with the Homemakers Union Environmental Protection Foundation and the Gonglaoping Industrial Development Association to integrate various resources and facilitate the project's smooth implementation. This cross-disciplinary cooperation model not only enhanced the project’s technical expertise but also brought additional support and resources to the community. Current Progress & Future Outlook To date, the project has completed its preliminary design phase and has successfully established a basic network of collaboration and community consensus. While certain design elements require further refinement, there is a growing sense of anticipation among residents, with a noticeable increase in their willingness to participate. Moving forward, the team will continue to enhance the design, optimize operational workflows, and introduce environmental education initiatives to further improve residents’ environmental awareness and practical engagement. This project not only offers new possibilities for Gonglaoping’s sustainable development but also serves as a model for resource recycling and local revitalization in other communities. |
