Abstract This design project “Grain Within Layered Time” takes Taichung’s Xitun Old Street as its primary site, addressing the rupture of historical fabric, the fading of community memory, and the decline of traditional markets under rapid urban development. Since the Qing dynasty, when Xidatun Street was a rice grain hub and core of Taichung, the area flourished further during the Japanese colonial period with landmarks such as the Xitun Granary Cluster. However, the rise of the 7th Redevelopment Zone and modern commerce has marginalized and erased much of this heritage, diminishing both cultural value and collective identity. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the district’s historical fabric through spatial design, proposing a hybrid model of “Market Park + Living History Theater” that re-links the morning market with the granary cluster, bringing urban memory back into daily life. Methodologically, the study employs historical mapping, diachronic overlays, and site surveys to trace Xitun’s evolution, identifying the continuity of crossroads blocks, street patterns, and the granary cluster. Lawrence Halprin’s Motation Study is further applied to document the temporal rhythms of the morning market—its stages of “setting up – peak – dispersal”—and translate them into legible urban behavioral scores. Strategies include adaptive reuse of historical buildings, reconnection of cultural nodes, and redesign of public space, guided by the concept of “layering and overlapping” to address temporality, multifunctionality, and diverse use. The study ultimately proposes a “Historical Market Park” that transforms the Xitun Morning Market and granary cluster into a composite realm of trade, social interaction, leisure, and cultural display. Key strategies are: (1) designating the granary cluster as a preservation zone and reusing it as a community hub, historical theater, and cultural experience hall, while adding a history plaza and social housing; (2) creating a sunken “Co-learning History Plaza” to restore water system memory and provide open, permeable circulation; (3) linking temples, schools, and the market through temporal strategies to supplement the lack of plazas and green space. This model revives and extends Xitun’s heritage and re-establishes its role in everyday life, while serving as a reference for historic district regeneration and time-based market design in Taiwan.
