SCORM-Compatible Learning Management System Based on Peer to Peer Infrastructure

Abstract

To reduce the effort of developing learning content in e-learning, many organizations spend a great deal of time and effort creating e-learning standards to facilitate sharing, reusability, and interoperability of the learning content. Among these standards, Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), which is proposed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), is currently the most popular standard. However, the SCORM-compatible learning management system (LMS) is based on server/client architecture. The LMS server may need to support a large number of the learners’ access concurrently. In this situation, if the server can not support the load, the learning quality is reduced and the learner’s learning desire is negatively affected. This paper proposes a SCORM-compatible LMS based on the Peer to Peer (P2P) infrastructure. The proposed P2P based LMS can enhance the scalability and the quality of service, improve the sharing efficiency of the learning contents , and effectively balance the loading of server/client demand thereby reducing the need for cost and development of large-scale servers.
